Elko is the seat of Elko County and the principal city of northeastern Nevada. The city hosts the Fourth Judicial District Court at the Elko County Courthouse Complex and serves as the regional hub for a mining-dominated economy. Elko is surrounded by some of the largest gold mines in North America (Newmont, Barrick Gold Nevada Gold Mines joint venture). The economy combines mining, ranching, agriculture, and associated services and logistics.
