Utah law

Environmental Laws in Utah.

Utah environmental law combines federal programs (RCRA, CERCLA, CWA, CAA) with state implementation through the Utah Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). Utah is distinctive for (1) extensive mining heritage (Bingham Canyon Mine, Kennecott, Rio Tinto); (2) Great Salt Lake environmental protection and recent drought-related crisis; (3) air-quality issues in Wasatch Front valleys (inversions); and (4) federal-land management (67% of Utah is federal land). Water rights follow prior-appropriation doctrine administered by the State Engineer.
