Michigan environmental law is led by Part 201 of the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act (NREPA) — Michigan's comprehensive contamination liability and cleanup statute. Michigan recognizes strict, joint, and several liability for hazardous substance releases with statutory defenses (bona fide prospective purchaser, due care). EGLE (Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy) administers state programs. The Great Lakes Water Quality Act and Wetlands Protection (Part 303) are also significant.

Part 201 — Environmental RemediationMCL § 324.20101 et seq.

Michigan's comprehensive contamination statute. Owners, operators, and persons who caused or contributed to releases may be liable for cleanup costs. Provides BFPP and due-care defenses and requires baseline environmental assessments.

Wetlands Protection (Part 303)MCL § 324.30301 et seq.

Michigan is one of the few states with state-delegated Section 404 authority. Permits required for draining, dredging, or filling regulated wetlands.

Air Pollution Control (Part 55)MCL § 324.5501 et seq.

EGLE Air Quality Division administers the Clean Air Act at the state level, issuing permits to install and to operate for regulated emission sources.

Michigan has among the nation's most active PFAS regulatory programs, with drinking-water MCLs for 7 PFAS compounds and the Michigan PFAS Action Response Team (MPART).
